Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive component of cannabis, and the CDC has stated, that the identified products come from the street or other informal sources such as friends, family or illegal traders.

The specific chemical, that caused the illness and death, was not identified. However, the outbreak is not related to nicotine-containing e-cigarettes, which has been in the United States for more than 10 years. The first case occurred at the end of March this year and appears, like all other cases, to be a sudden onset lung disease.
